Editor Notes

🎯 Should you use Make (Integromat)?

Buy if: You run an agency with multiple clients and need one automation layer that can mirror workflows across different ATS/CRM stacks without rebuilding from scratch.

Skip if: You have zero technical patience and expect drag-and-drop to mean "click twice and it works" because Make's visual builder still requires logic thinking and API troubleshooting.

⚡ In practice

  • Setup: 2-4 hours for your first real workflow, 30 minutes once you understand the pattern.
  • ATS sync: Works across Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Ashby if you map fields correctly.
  • Candidate updates: Fires on status change, pushes to Slack/email/CRM simultaneously.
  • Interview scheduling: Connects Calendly/Chili Piper to ATS, updates both systems automatically.

⚠️ Where it breaks

  • Error messages tell you something failed but not always why, so you end up testing scenarios manually to find the break point.
  • Free plan caps at 1,000 operations per month which sounds generous until you realize one candidate sync can burn 15-20 operations across multiple steps.
  • Webhooks from some ATS platforms fire inconsistently, meaning your automation runs twice or not at all with no warning.

💸 Is it worth the money?

$9/month gets you 10,000 operations which covers maybe 30-50 candidate flows per day depending on workflow complexity. If you bill one client $3,000/month for recruiting ops and Make saves your team 8 hours of manual data entry weekly, the ROI is obvious.

🆚 If not this

  • Zapier -> Simpler setup, worse at complex conditional logic, costs more at scale.
  • Phantombuster -> Better for scraping and enrichment, useless for ATS integrations.
  • Bullhorn Automation -> Works only inside Bullhorn, no cross-platform flexibility.

🎯 Final verdict

Buy if you manage workflows across multiple clients or tools and need one automation engine that adapts without vendor lock-in.

✍️ Pieter's personal experience

Make (formerly Integromat) is my preferred platform for building automations. It's visual, intuitive, and powerful enough for most recruiting workflows without needing to write code. I use it to connect tools that don't natively talk to each other: syncing CRM data, triggering notifications, automating candidate pipeline updates, that kind of thing. The drag-and-drop interface makes it genuinely accessible. Compared to Zapier, I find Make more flexible and better value for money. Compared to n8n, it's more user-friendly but slightly less powerful. For me, Make hits the sweet spot. If you're a recruiter who wants to automate repetitive tasks but doesn't want to learn programming, this is where I'd start. The free tier is generous enough to get real work done.
