Editor Notes
🎯 Should you use n8n?
Buy if: You have a dev or ops person who can self-host and build custom workflows that Zapier can't handle for recruiting data pipelines.
Skip if: You need plug-and-play automation with zero technical setup or you're a solo recruiter with no one to troubleshoot node errors.
⚡ In practice
- ●Setup: 2-4 hours if self-hosting, 20 minutes on cloud
- ●ATS to CRM sync: Works but breaks when APIs change
- ●Candidate status updates: Reliable once mapped correctly
⚠️ Where it breaks
- ●Debugging failed nodes requires reading error logs, not clicking a "fix" button like Make or Zapier offer.
- ●Documentation assumes you understand webhooks, HTTP requests, and JSON structure.
💸 Is it worth the money?
Free if self-hosted, $20/month for cloud starter plan with 2,500 executions. Worth it only if you have someone technical or you're moving off Zapier to cut costs at scale.
🆚 If not this
- ●Make -> Visual interface is easier, better for recruiters without dev support
- ●Zapier -> Pay more but skip all troubleshooting, works out of the box
- ●Tray.io -> Enterprise budget, handles complex data transforms n8n struggles with
🎯 Final verdict
Buy if you have tech support and need flexible automation at low cost, skip if you want reliability without reading docs.
n8n is the more powerful cousin of Make. It's open-source, self-hostable, and gives you way more control over your automations. I've used it for more complex workflows that Make couldn't handle elegantly. The trade-off is clear though: it's more technical. If you're comfortable with JSON, APIs, and basic logic, n8n is incredibly capable. If those words make you nervous, stick with Make. For me, n8n is what I reach for when I need something custom, like scraping a site, enriching the data, filtering it, and pushing results to multiple destinations. The self-hosted option is great for data privacy too, which matters in recruiting. It's not for everyone, but if you're technically inclined, it's a powerhouse.
